FUNAFUJI As Dubstep slowly juggernauts its way across the world as the sound of the modern dancefloor alight, Funafuji, along with several other key DJs, has claimed the flag down South and leads the Dubstep revolution from the fertile sonic soil of Cape Town. Along with Ish and Blotchy, she is one of the main DJs and organizers of South Africa’s premier Dubstep night, Step Up. Since its inception at the beginning of 2008, the party has become a highlight on Cape Town’s music event calendar attracting hundreds of loyal bass-obsessed fans every month. But while so many DJs jump on the Dubstep bandwagon, playing ear-bleeding sets of distorted half-step techno, Funafuji’s love of the genre means that her sets are a tapestry of its short yet rich history. Evocative subsonics, minimal growls, beautiful melodies, splintered beats and of course rib-rattling bass are all features of the sound that makes her one of South Africa’s most diverse Dubstep DJs. She has also become one of the hardest working ladies in showbiz, playing across Cape Town and expanding on her party skills to introduce nights such as the weekly Stash n Mash at Hectic On Hope along with her Step Up family. As Dubstep progresses at a lightening pace, Funafuji moves perfectly in time with it, like someone who has just discovered how to dance in synch to the double-time rhythms of modern bass-music. http://www.facebook.com/funafuji http://www.soundcloud.com/funafuji RICHARD THE THIRD As one half of local dubstep warriors, Biscope, producer and performer for Spoek Mathambo and Mshini Wam and all round eclectic mad cap music machine, Richard the Third walks the musical tightrope like an expert. Being a central agent in South Africa's electronic music scene, Richard the Third is a regular DJ at the country’s biggest left-of-centre music clubs such as the Assembly and Fiction in Cape Town and the Woods and Alexander Theatre in Joburg. His sets are a roller-coaster ride of the best of modern bass music: grinding electro, rinsing dubstep and everything in between. Production wise he has remixed everyone from 340ml to Sibot, puts out his own music on local labels such as African Dope and On A Break records and has produced the bulk of the music for Spoek Mathambo’s debut album, “Mshini Wam” released on internationally acclaimed label BBE.
